D&D is the mother of all roleplaying games. If you tried to describe roleplaying to an outsider D&D is usually the game you reference because just about everyone has heard of it. What I was wondering is do you think there will be a lot of people who actually roleplay? And will you be one of them?

I plan on it, I dont Roleplay very many game but I cant see myself NOT roleplaying this, would just be to weird. I play the pen and paper DnD. First charcter I make will probally be the one I am playing now, elven fighter/mage. Just hope that I can get a elven thinblade *crosses fingers*

I have been roleplay deprived given that my fellow players and GM were always rules lawyers...that takes all the fun out of it. I just hope that the rules being held by someone else will allow us to break down into some form of Roleplay.
:: My first toon will be a Thief/Mage, Elven. Just because I love the sneakyness of a thief and I love the Spell casting abilities of a mage :) ::

New and improved, 3 lvls in one day, adding to his arsenal Fulcrum Shift..oh yea. Can't wait to get some time under his belt now. I can now hurl Boulders....omfg no he didn't :) I look so pimp in my newest power...its brown and bumpy all over..can you guess?... Thats right is Stone Armor and it is kick butt. Fissure rocks my world! Fifty soon. Fifty on 12-10-2005 at 12:35am after 400hrs of hard labor Wanna throw a special shout out to Illusion Mastor, CBail, Mudpuppy, Jupiter Sweets, Dark Hollow, Lethal Fury, Pan, Majin Tank, Lotus of Death, and all the others i know I am forgetting for their help. And also to all the gameampers here at gameamp whom without I would never have made it.

The responses in this thread give me hope. It has been a long while since I've been in a MMO that actually had people roleplaying in it. Now if the game would just hurry up and release!

Us old folks are fond of this game to no end... I even remember Chain Mail, D&D precursor.

Alignments:
To me, one of the great things about D&D has always been the alignments. As a simplified system for how your character will view the world, it is really powerfull. While sitting there with your character sheet on the table, nibbling on th end of the pencil the host so kindly provided as everybody always forgets to bring them, it'd allow you to make a quick choice based on generalized concepts, then think about it a bit while working out the rest. Then you could 'flesh it out' while playing your first few sessions. That's how it was for me anyway.
The system also made it to the Bioware games, which I'm sure any computerized D&D fan knows and most likely loves. There the system limited your available options and responses to the NPCs and in later games you had more freedom of choice, but 'bad things' would happen if you strayed too far from your alignment. Still the Alignment system paled in comparison to Bioware's ability to really give your character life, romance and meaning I must say. Damn, I still remember getting called away from Baldur's Gate II for half an hour to come back and wonder if the NPCs would mind being disturbed in their conversation.
So what does this have to do with Dungeons and Dragons Online? Well, it seems we're being curtailed in which Alignments we can use. There's nop option for the three Evil alignments, Lawful, Neutral and Chaotic. Now, I personally tend to play a Chaotic-Good Ranger or True-Neutral Druid if I can, as those suit me best, but I can imagine it not being much fun for a lot of players who like playing those alignments. Some of my own recollections of old P&P+C style roleplaying are of parties with Good, Neutral and Evil characters in them. As long as people didn't start taking it all to seriously, some of the situations would be hilarious, with the Chaotic-Neutral Thief trying to prevent the Lawful-Good Paladin from noticing what the something-Evil Dwarven Mage was up to this time. Well you get the drift.
I just worry that it will limit the Roleplaying a somewhat, though other things I've read so far give me hope that it will be a workable aspect of the game, one of which is the ingame audio chat. Granted, it has to work, but if it does, well it just allows for lots of fun if you get a group that works at it a bit. I'll have to start practicing my 'sexy elven enchantress' voice again. Gonna be hard, I'm 15 years older than the last time I used it, been smoking for 12 of those and had the occasional Whisky in between. But hey, isn't using your own imagination part of what Roleplaying is all about. My 'sexy elven enchantress' voice will give you that :-)

There are two, very distinct camps in DDO. Those who role-play, and those who find it annoying.
If you want to role-play, my advice is to either found a guild that encourages it, or find a pre-existing one that does, and game with them more often than not. Most times, random-groups are made up of people just intent on clearing the dungeon and moving on to the next. But, in guilds or with friends you meet - role-playing is awesome. :)
I prefer the role-playing approach, personally. But, I abandon it when I'm with a group I don't know. I've also had some die-hard role-players come close to ruining random-groups. There are a few Clerics who insist on being "Battle-Clerics" and don't heal others. I've seen people in the party die and the cleric had over 90% spellpoints left. In a group of friends who know this about the cleric and know to stock up on potions ahead of time - that's fine. But, in a random group this role-playing can cripple a party.
So, my opinion is that role-playing enhances the game to an unbelievable degree... but know your party before you do. :)
And, just to address the point of Alignment from the poster above... Turbine wants us to be the Heroes! of the world - and evil can't be the heroes. While I enjoy playing a Lawful Evil Rouge on occasion - I agree with their stance.

I have played this game in its varying forms for about 19 years, since about third grade... damn I'm getting old. I cant imagine not roleplaying... the thing I dont like though is the voice chat just from a RPing standpoint... For about the last 10 years I've had two standards when making a character, first is I look around the room to find something spelled backwards that makes a decent name, my last ones were Surtic and Cinos, citrus from the bottle of mountain dew I was drinking and sonic from a panasonic stereo... second I roll for male or female, males are odd(well cause you just are) and females even, hence my problem with voice chat. I dont care what sex I play and having a female voice with a male char or vice versa might be a RP problem for some people so i'll probably just stick to typing but I'm deffinately going to roll play.

I would love to roleplay, my problem with roleplaying is going to be this; most people in general will know nothing of the world of Eberron.
Mostly people who will play off a backstory they created for their character and it makes no sence. For me rollplaaying isn't smilpy sounding like a dwarf fighter or having a favored enemy and just slaying it.
No, roleplaying is being emersed in the world. Having a past, present, and future that fits within that world without condradicting it's history.
Other then that, it's all good and I will be into the RPing.
The mistakes of today, are the scares of tomorrow.

I am with you on this one. I am playing a character on screen, and so is the rest of the party. I don't want/need to hear their voices. For me it isn't so much the male vs female thing as it is RL vs in-game fantasy. I want to submerge into the fantasy. Having to listen random people does not help. I can imagine voice will make fighting easier, but it takes for me part of the fun away. I was afaid I was of a dieing breed, but I am glad to hear I am not alone.
As for Cannith Lord's problem that people don't know the world Eberron. I imagine that indeed only a few people really know that. I don't know anything about it, other then a global notion of what any fantasy world is like. Personally I will solve that by playing exotic characters that have sailed the seas in search of adventure. I named my characters in Shawili. So I can play the ignorance card to some extend. We are interacting with other people, so we can't always get things our way. If the party just want to grind xp I will run along as well until I get bored of it. But hopefully I can role play to my hearts content.

I would have to agree totally with this. It is difficult to properly roleplay in a game without knowing the story, land, monsters, etc.. that exist within it.
It's one thing to have your characters speech match his/her supposed personality, but when you start using places, monsters, and items' names in your roleplayin like they were common everyday thing, is when things go from sounding silly, to fun.

A few things.
1st I was thinking of using the voice chat for OOC comments (aka "trap" "ahhhh ambush" ect) and then using the text for all my rp'ing needs. I don't have any problems rp'ing a male, but I do thing my female voice would ruin it a bit for other's immersion.
2nd I haven't created any back stories yet because I am not familar with Ebberon. So I'm learning what I can (yes I'm one of those that reads all the stuff in quests) w/ the beta, so when it launches I can come up with some cool bio's.
And as for many people not knowing Ebberon, well I've encountered the problem of people not knowing anything about the game before in quite a few of the rp'ing games I've been in. I just try to work with what they have given me. Just remember you don't know what is writen about people in their bio (unless you are friends in game). So you just work with the person they play and not get into mega detail unless you know it is someone you can do so with.

That's just what I was trying to say. A lot of times things get lost in translation for me, between my brain and the keyboard. :)
RL works in much the same way. You never know a person's backstory until you get to know them...
That's my philosophical thought for the day. How RP relates to RL. :)

This is true, I've found this top be true in well, every MMO I've played and it makes it hard to RP when those around you don't and/or can't. Sometimes being able to hold down a conversation can prove tricky.
But when you get a bunch of people togeather who rp and are good at it and know their game and setting it's wicked fun. The thing about DDO is it's a little harder to make a back story off of since no one starts in starting cities but rather all the same place.

I think that where everyone starts off is perfect. There are so many places that we could have come from. I mean we are in a harbor in the beginning... I think it leaves it open for more back story possiblities where they have the entrance.

Well, that would depend on the POV of the person. I find everyone starting off in the same place somewhat limiting. Xen'Drik is a continent of exploration. which is why our characters our there.
But the fact that there arn't starting cities I guess open the floor for any possiblity.

Lol know what you mean, I had a TA once that began every recitation class with how to make a different drink. I also once told a prof of mine in the midst of talking about random things that "I had been spending too much money at the bars." his response was "Well, you have to think about it like this, you can't spend too much money on booze because every dollar you spend on it, is a dollar spent on improving your soul."
but to stop hijacking the thread... I see the rp aspect like Jeni does. You can make your background from anywhere fitting in the world, you just have to make up a reason that you got on the boat and went where you did, to start what you did, everything else is up to you. I just wish they had used the Forgoten Realms or Dragonlance settings because I actually know things about them. I don't know anything about Ebberon and I'm becoming hard pressed find anything terribly useful since it is fairly new. I dont want to have to buy the game, and then buy the source book to make a setting appropriate character and be able to talk about places, things, people, have reactions to other races that would be standard for my race etc. etc.

I think the starting position is pretty good. We all start in one city now, but I expect we'll see expansions in some form (which game hasn't had those) and a reasonable format for these would be to add a whole new city every six to twelve months (let's keep Turbine working their butts of) which would then become valid starting places as well. As I gathered, Stormreach is one of the more cosmopolitan cities on the continent/world, so it seems a good choice to me for the first starting area. With those expansions, experienced players might want to start out new characters at those new starting locations and be free to do so. THat'd be lovely in my opinion.
Also, I expect the game when it releases will include a Lore booklet or something to that effect which will at the least allow you to fill in a sketchy background story for your characters to build and expand on. I played a lot of P&P characters where my background story was a few key-notes at first and gor really complicated as the campaign progressed.
