So I am playing a Paladin for the group that my family and I play in...we have switched around alot in our quest to find which class we like most and I have finally landed on Paladin.
So I just reached third level tonight and I was really hoping to do this because I got to test one of my theories. See when I acheived level two and got lay on hands (which according to the user guide I shouldn't have got till third ) I read the description to find out how much it would heal and it told me my Charisma bonus * by my paladins level. Well I had a +3 charisma bonus and a lvl of two so I figured only 6 hp...not so much...I believe the number was 36...so I was like ok whats up? So then i thought, well maybe they have a base multiplier, as I have not played a paladin in PnP I did not know if they did or not. So the base modifier then would have been 6, so this is where in lies my theory (the base modifier theory) but herein lies test one.
Lvl 2: Base Modifier(6) * Charisma Bonus(3) * Lvl(2) = 36
Lvl 3: Base Modifier(not assumed to have changed) * Charisma Bonus(3) * lvl(3) = 39?
Thus my theory is wrong, which I can take but my question would be why? And then once why, how? How taking to context, how they do they find the paladins healing ability?

Edit:
Update: As I looked at the post after having posted it I looked at the math and noticed that the charisma * the level is added to thirty so far...so now that begs the question as to why? I can attribute 20 points to make up for the heroic durability but I cannot for the life of me figure where the other ten points are located.

huh I think I only have 20 added to mine... I'll have to go and check.

ok so if you get thirty it is probably (10 * mod) + (mod * lvl)

and because math is hard for barbies that actually works out to (10 + lvl) * mod
*edit 3*
it just seams like I get 20 added because my bonus is +2 and yours +3... lol i'm sure if I dug around the official site I could confirm this but I'm going to bed instead... however that is just another shining example that the bloody compendium is filled with bad info.

I heal 42 at lvl 4 with a 16 charisma. I will make lvl 5 tonight if all goes well. So I believe the +30 is what I have at this point.

New and improved, 3 lvls in one day, adding to his arsenal Fulcrum Shift..oh yea. Can't wait to get some time under his belt now. I can now hurl Boulders....omfg no he didn't :) I look so pimp in my newest power...its brown and bumpy all over..can you guess?... Thats right is Stone Armor and it is kick butt. Fissure rocks my world! Fifty soon. Fifty on 12-10-2005 at 12:35am after 400hrs of hard labor Wanna throw a special shout out to Illusion Mastor, CBail, Mudpuppy, Jupiter Sweets, Dark Hollow, Lethal Fury, Pan, Majin Tank, Lotus of Death, and all the others i know I am forgetting for their help. And also to all the gameampers here at gameamp whom without I would never have made it.

just for clarification what I was trying to get across above is that it isn't +30 or +20 (which is what it looks like I get because my modifier is only +2) the actual calculation is (10 + lvl) * mod. So for me it works to (10 +5) * 2 = 30 which is why I thought it was + 20 you guys have at lvl 4 (10 + 4) * 3 or 42, which is why you thought it was plus 30.

Ok at lvl 4 and a charisma of 15(I took off my cloak of charisma) I healed...28, with a 16 charisma I healed 42.
So the breakdown for this would be:
lvl 4 * 2(cha) = 8 + 20 which is 28
lvl 4 * 3(cha) = 12 + 30 for 42
We can derive that each 2 points of charisma past the base of 10, yields 10 extra points of loh, so 12 = 10pts, 14 = 20, 16 =30 and so on.
I am now level 5 with an 18 charisma. So the breakdown now should be. lvl 5*4(cha)= 20 +40 for a total of 60.
I made level 5, but was so excited to get an action point to boost my charisma to an 18 that I forgot to check the loh.
I will check my latest theory and Ozones to see which one seems applicable.
Will report back later with the results. I just need more numbers to come up with a viable solution.

Oh you have it right, it is just two different ways of getting to the same thing. the equation (10 * x) + (y * x) is the same as (10 + y) * x. or in our case (10 * mod) + (lvl * mod) since you are multiplying both parts of the equation times the mod you can pull it outside the brackets and wind up with the every so slightly simplified (10 + lvl) * mod... and here I said I'd never use algebra for anything lol

We have the formula woot. At lvl 5 I did indeed heal 60.
So there you have it, the break down for loh.

hmmm, because everything I have found and what we figured would be that with the +5 from your cha at 20 you should be at 75

Thats why I wanted to mention it. It may or may not have something to d owith the fact that my Pali is a halfling... but that should only pump up the saving throws, and not any other stat. I also know because my Pali only has 80 hitpoints - and I thought it was funny/excessive that his LoH could blast him for more than full hitpoints. ( not to mention most undead bosses on Normal would be toast after 160 pts of LoH damage )

Yeah it shouldn't be from race, or anything, but is like you have an extra +1 coming in somewhere, then the calc would still work lol... oh well....

Hmm, well I can see three different things here.
1) It is purely a glitch and the formula is still correct
2) The formula is expotential meaning as level increases so does the bonus
3) The formula is wrong and it was coincidence that it work on 40% of the levels in the game. :)
I unfortunately have not been able to play my palli because of work schedules but I will think this over.

Screenshot of the 90-HP LoH.
The only stats that could be impacting this are Wisdom and Charisma. My Pali's Wis is 14 ( maybe 16 - I need to check ), and his Chr is 20.

At lvl 6 with a 19 charisma I heal 64.
6 *4 = 24 + 40 = 64.
There may well be a bigger bonus for 20 charisma. I am a dwarf and am close to level 7. I am not sure when I will get a +3 charisma item, or paladins charisma.
I'd be willing to wager the bonus is more for a 20 ability score.
We will find out, oh yes!

Just for my info of research. Do you have any items that would effect healing? Devotion, ardor items? What enhancements do you have?
This will help me track it down.

Yeah maybe the bonus for 20 is bugged, or maybe it is just you En you bugged your character didn't you :P

No, I don't have any healing perks... I'm speccing for aura, not healing. BUT - I was wrong. I have a 12 Wis, and a 22 Chr. I forgot my cloak. I think that may pop the forumla back into whack. :)

Score, we now know.
Lvl 7, now thanks to lightning fast Stormcleaves.
We can confirm the formula again, so thanks for verifying it. Trying to poke holes is not bad.
I wonder if any of the devotion/ardor does effect loh. I have both effects for my cleric and I pass them too my Paladin, I doubt they will.
