Ranger: "Bet you can't hit the eye." "Left or right?"
The ranger is the tracker, the hunter, the marksman. Has some of the sneaky and alert skills of the rogue, but won't die in one hit (unless it's really BIG) if they get caught sneaking.
As a ranger, you'll be the jack of all trades in combat styles, but won't get your hands on any spells until a ways after you start.
As the emblem of a ranger goes, I do recommend you put a good bit of interest into using bows, especially if you have a few extra skill points into Strength. Why?
Starter feat: Bow Strength. This means you can channel extra damage from your strength score into your bow damage, though the normal modifier for damage and attack bonus is Dexterity.
As it goes, the general recommendation for rangers is to focus on bows and lighter weaponry, and stick more to light armor than medium or heavy. Rangers don't start with Medium or Heavy armor proficiency, so there goes a feat better used on something else - Along with the fact that with heavier armor, your dexterity bonuses go out the window and into the dumpster.
Example of a ranger (how I build mine)
Human Ranger, Male
Strength: 12
Dexterity: 14
Constitution: 14
Intelligence: 14
Wisdom: 12
Charisma: 10
Chosen feats:
Luck of Heroes (+1 on all saving throws)
Precision (Mode: ½ damage, but +4 attack bonus)
Favored Enemy: Undead (Helps all throughout the game, as there's always zombies!)
I can't exactly recall skill point distribution, but I maxed out Heal, Hide, Listen, Move Silently, Search, and Spot.
If you want to be a little less survivable, but be better prepared for spells when you do get them, swap some points from Constitution to Wisdom. Keep the Dexterity and Intelligence at 14 - You need the AC and ranged bonus, and the extra skill points and bonus to Search checks helps a LOT.
