So you decided to be a Halfling and you chose to be a rogue, but you’re just not sure how to make him perform. Well fear not fellow thieves for the path you have chosen can lead you down an excellent path of glory.
First off let’s look at the race you’ve chosen shall we.
Ability Adjustments: +2 Dex, -2 Str
The Dex is a vital part of any rogue. It is based on a lot of skills and provides you with AC your going to need. The Str isn’t needed so much. Yes it reflects damage but as you progress you’re going to find that, that damage is made up from other elements.
Special Abilities: +1AC, +1 attack, +4 hide, +2 jump, listen, move silently, +1 on all saving throws, +2 vs. fear, +1 on attack with throw weapons, -25% carrying capacity
What is not to like about that? You get extra AC, extra attack, extra saving throws, +2 to fear the most annoying thing in the game! You get added points to some essential rogue skills. The only down side is the -25% carrying capacity, but let me tell you something, you don’t need to pick up every single item to make the big cash. Hells no, in fact I hardly even pick up anything that is masterwork and I have as much PP as anyone else!
Now why did we go Halfling over the Elf? Well Elf gets a -2 Con. That is a Cannith no, no. Absolutely not acceptable. One problem rogues tend to have, is they die fast. You don’t need to waste creation points on getting that Con back to ground level. Elves are immune to sleep magic effects, maybe it’s only me, but I have never seen any player affected with sleep magic, so what’s the point? Elves also get + 2 to listen, spot, and search, although spot and search are needed rogue skills, +2 isn’t much for these as your going to spot traps anyways and you’ll always be able to search them out.
So really, Halfling or Elf? If you’re choosing Elf, I suggest you stop reading, this is for Halflings only.
Now let’s take a look at the class. The mighty rogue! As a rogue you are a jack of all trades as you get many skill points right off the bat. (8 + Int Mod) x 4, heck that’s a lot of skill points! You have a hit die of d6 and your starting proficiencies are; all simple weapons, rapier, shortbow, short sword, and light armor. At level 1 you’ll start with sneak attack (+1d6 dmg), a BAB of 0, Fort ST 0, Reflex ST 2, Will ST 0.
Now that you know the basics and what you’re starting off with lets get into the creation.
You stats should look like this;
STR: 6
DEX: 10
CON: 8
INT: 8
WIS: 8
CHA: 8
There are many things you can do here, and here is what I suggest;
STR: 6
DEX: 18
CON: 14
INT: 16
WIS: 10
CHA: 8
No, I’m not crazy. Let me explain. I’ve had many people tell me you either have to be a sneak rogue or a disable traps rogue. I call them liars. With an Int of 16 you’ll start with 44 skill points and at every rogue level have another 11.
Dex is also vital as you Str is so low that we are going to be taking the weapon finesse feat. This means you will hit more with the weapons that allow for it.
The Con is obvious, you want hit points! YOU WANT TO LIVE! This is the main reason for not going Elf. Your Con is to low and you’ll die like a fly. 14 Con is a good spot to be.
Wis to 10, so you’re not suffering anything against will and so that your Wis skills aren’t suffering a penalty.
You can make your stats as you please, but this is my guide and I’m going to do things my way! HAHAHA! Anyways on to business. With so many skill points where do you put them all? Well first the essentials; Hide, Move Silently, Open Lock, Disable Device, Spot, Search, Tumble, Jump, Listen, Diplomacy, with remaining point round Heal out to 0, Bluff to 0, and put those remaining points into Use Magic Device.
You are the master of the jack of all trades. I told you those people were liars!
Now you get a feat, oh yes what to chose. My humble suggestions Weapon Finesse from the get go. This can’t be used right away anyways; neither can Two Weapon Fighting as they both require a BAB of +1 and you sadly have +0.
Now you’re in the world and ready to go, do the tutorial quest and get your first action point. Now you get your first enhancement, but what to take? Don’t be a fool, your going to need the rogue action boost. Without it you’re not going to have fun in the first tavern quest. You have to do this solo and you’re going to have to use your bow.
Yes you suck with everything; sorry to say your life isn’t an easy one in the first level. But with some luck and using potions and your action boost you’ll get through the first quest easy peasy. I suggest not killing all the kobolds, kill off the ones by the shrine, then sneak past the rest. Get the necklace, hit the alter and then run your little Halfling ass to the shrine. Use it then before the human. Sneak up to the door so he doesn’t see you when it opens, use your dmg action boost, wait until he passes you and with any luck you’ll hit him with a sneak attack on the first shot and then it’s game over. All you have to do is take the hit and keep firing, don’t move or it gives him free attacks, because you can’t shoot and run. Use your potions on this guy also. You will kill him just give it time.
Now that’s over, you can group. Yay! Get past the Goodblade quests with grouping and well you can’t solo at all so group the whole time. The only 4 enhancements you’ll need for a while are Rogue Action Boost, Skill Stealth, Skill Ingenuity, Skill Perception.
Now here’s the trick to making a successful rogue. When you hit level 2, we’re not taking a rogue level. OMFG WHY CANNITH! Because we want to be the best at what we do in all aspects. We’re going to take a fighter level!
Yes a fighter level. This should almost be self explanatory as you get extra hit points, a BAB of +1 and a bonus feat! What are we going to take? Two Weapon Fighting! Yes now you have the required BAB for both weapon finesse and two weapon fighting. Life is getting a little easier isn’t it? Also you don’t have to take any enhancements at level 2. That’s 4 action points down the toilet. Also spend your skill points wisely here, I suggest putting up disable device again and search and spot. Try getting those rogue skills up some on this fighter level.
At level 3 we’re right back to a rogue level and alas we get another feat. Time to make up for that lost dmg we’re losing from that low Str. Time to specialize in a weapon type. You can choose what you will. It’s all preference as to what you’re looking to use. I personally use slashing. Piercing weapons do to low of dmg as it is and nothing looks cooler then a frost sickle and an acid short sword.
At level 4 we’re going rogue again and this time we get a skill point. Take a guess at where it’s going? Don’t have a clue well that’s why your reading still right? Well that skill point is going into Dex. Spend those skill points as you did before, get up those rogue skills! These make or break you. For enhancements at this level, we finally get to spend those action points. We’re going to replace our old Enhancements with their new upgrades.
You’re going to take rogue levels at 5 and 6 and at level 6 we get a new feat. Now I can’t hold your hand any longer, it’s going to be up to you what you chose to do from here, but I will give some tips.
- Repeating Light Crossbows work wonders. I really mean that, acid or frost, you can’t go wrong.
- You can get 1 more bonus feat by taking a second fighter level. Hey a feat and some more hit points!
- As a Halfling you’re already mastered in hide and sneak, why keep that enhancement anymore? It can be replaced!
- Tumble is your friend. Those who say there is no use for it, give me a headache!
- You get another feat at level 9, know what you want to do and plan ahead.
I hope my guide has been helpful in how to go about making a Halfling Rogue. Anyone who says you can’t master all the trades, put out the dmg, and survive the blows has obviously never made the proper build.
You can find me on the Adar server, my rogue’s name is Captin Kidd if you ever want to see this build in the flesh. So go now and take to the shadows, your life of adventure awaits you!
