When fighting the multitude of Oozes, Jellies, and Puddings in the game - I have a few suggestions that help a great deal.
First - don't worry about clubs. Unequip your weapon and shield and use your fists. Unlike using weapons, there is no damage inflicted on equipment for using your fists. The damage to armor or equipment is only when they hit you - or when you use a weapon on them. Using *no* weapon avoids this entirely.
Second - speaking of damage inflicted when Oozes hit you... try to use Acid Resistance or Acid Protection when fighting them. This will reduce the damage they do to you *and* your equipment. They will still do some slight impact damage when they hit - but their acid will be virtually negated.
These tips saved me tremendously in Repair bills, so I wanted to pass it along.
