The old method of breaking boxes, killing all the monsters to get 20% bonuses is not the most efficient way of leveling. The modern method is to complete the quest as fast as possible. Often splitting your group into 2 parts and to hit levers or switches.
For example in durks your 2 parties can go to each side and kill each of the kobold brothers. You can finish this quest in 5min tops. I've seen people do all the optionals for a mere extra 200-300 xp and taking an extra 30 min doing this.
Sewer rescue can be done in 2 minutes. You kill the two kobolds and get across the platform and run all the way to the boss area. Kill the boss. This will give you 500 xp in 2 minutes instead of doing all the optionals and getting 600 xp in 15 minutes.
For example speed water works takes 15-20 minutes just doing the minimum required. I've seen groups take up to 1.5 hours and selling and leveling between parts 2 and 3 also is a waste of time.
Another example is delera's part 2. If you kill everything it might take 1.5-2hrs. The quest can be done if you run through everything and not kill anything not required in under 15 min. The kill everything method gives you 9-10k while the run through method will give you 8k in 1/6th the time.
