If you played AC2 you should know this trick...
If you're atop a high cliff for ledge to avoid having to go down those very slow ladders you can always jump on anything with a slight incline/decline so that you can "slide" your way to the ground. You'll take little to no falling damage while doing so.
This works especially well with quests involving caverns or mountainous ledges.
